A beautiful February day at 16 degrees, sunshine and accompanied by my great children. That was the way how I imagined to participate in the carnival opening!
Although the crowds of tourists wanted to see the same as me, the good mood in Venice swept me away.
Why were these worn? Is it because of the carnival or are there other reasons?
Anyone who has ever been to the carnival in Venice has also seen the masks with their beaks. These masks were worn by the doctors because they believe that they protect you from diseases. Above all, it was the plague at that time, that’s why it is also called “doctor mask”.Google Maps. You also have to praise the patience of these actors, thousands of requests for a souvenir photo and always with a smile.
A visit to the island of Murano
Who does not know Murano? Known for the long tradition of glassmaking. I have been to Venice many times and this time I managed to look at Murano. First of all a recommendation from me! Absolutely early in the morning on the island.
There are not so many tourists and the streets are for you alone. Good for great photos.
The island is reached by boat directly from the train station and it takes 33 minutes. I recommend you get off at the station “Murano Faro” there is also the lighthouse “Faro di Murano” (Google Maps). Along the “Calle Bressagio” you will find great shops and luckily you will also see one or two glassblowers (but not on the weekend)!
Quality, craftsmanship, and history make Murano glass very expensive. Italians know very well which price to ask! To negotiate a good price, well not on Murano. In two out of three shops, the ladies were very rude to the questions of customers (with the question, can we do something with the price)? A quick and vociferous answer was always, that’s MURANO glass.
There are other foreign tourists who will buy something. But with such a bad facial expression and listlessness to sit in a shop and shout at the tourists, I think this a no go! That’s Venice! Nevertheless, I found a cheap business in Murano. Has great prices and very friendly.
A great meeting place with a restaurant of a different kind! A wonderful terrace to sit and get the first glimpse of the spring sun. You should experience that yourself, you can not ignore the owner! Yes, the owner be surprised!
Where can you find the authentic Venice?
Every time I’m in Venice I try to avoid the tourist hotspots! There are a lot of small streets and beautiful Venetian buildings and parks in the middle of Venice, where you will rarely find a tourist. This time I was in the district Castello not far from the Biennale away. The bottom 4 photos you can see how it looks in this district something.
The exact location (Castello district) can be found here Google Maps. Would be an idea for you on your next visit to Venice.
In the lagoon city, there is something that is not at right angles.
The Leaning Tower of Venice! The most striking for me is the “Chiesa di Sant’Antonin” as you can see in the photo. As we all know, the foundations are built on wooden posts. In the second photo, you can see that even normal houses are affected. Pretty close, see at the top of the photo. I call it “The Kissing Houses of Venice”. It’s like a thriller.
Away from the path, you will always find great photo objects, one of them is like the southerners dry their laundry. For me it’s just awesome, it does not matter if it’s winter or summer, you always hang the laundry like that on me.
There is nothing better than enjoying a day with a great sunset like the photo below! Another article about Venice, information with a preview of the carnival and “how and what” can be found at this link! Carnival 2019 in Venice – Tips how to get to Venice, Hotel and more!
Here are a few suggestions for different tickets that I can recommend. No queuing in Venice! If you enjoyed this post, please share! Thank you
